Chapter 5

There were perhaps ten men, and they were definitely not guards. To Allison’s eye, they were inmates, mean looking with buzz cuts. They wore striped clothes, like Mullins, and they carried tools - regular tools, hammers and screwdrivers. One carried an axe. They were gesturing and arguing, and it was plain to see that some didn’t like the others. A voice inside Allison’s head told her to run, to turn tail and get away, but if she did that, she would have another story that no one would believe. Instead, she eased around the corner, pinning herself to the wall, and slowly moved closer.

Ahead, the argument heated up. The men started pushing and shoving. They threatened and waved their weapons. Then, the man with the axe raised it and slammed it into the head of another inmate. Blood and brains spurted out, as the other men shouted and laughed. As if insane, they jumped and danced while the man pulled his axe free. The wounded man collapsed and that was when the man with the axe spotted Allison.

He pointed at her with the axe, and all the others turned to her.

That was when Allison screamed and ran.

Allison’s only thought was to reach the infirmary. She would be safe there. She ran as fast as she could, and she didn’t see the man who reached out and grabbed her arm. Even as she struggled to break free, he spoke.

“Hey, stop, hey. What’s going on?”

She stopped fighting and looked. The man who had grabbed her was a guard. His badge said CAL. He held up his hand.

“They sent me down here to have this looked at.”

“Oh,” Allison said. “Yes, yes.” She glanced over her shoulder but none of the inmates came around the corner, and Allison was pretty sure none of them would. She was pretty sure, that if the guard looked around the corner, he would see nothing unusual.

“What is it?” he asked. “Someone after you?”

She shook her head. “I…I have this smart watch.” She showed him her watch. “Every hour or so, it tells me to get up and move. So… I was just running for a little exercise. That’s all.”

Cal looked at her as if she was batty, and at that moment, she did feel a little crazy. She smiled, and he released her arm.

“Come on,” she said. “Let’s take a look at that hand.”

Allison put Cal in an exam room and inside thirty minutes had his cut treated. A simple bandage and some advice about keeping things clean was all he needed before she locked the door behind him. After he was gone, she returned to her desk and simply sat. She pushed her brain to remember the group of inmates she had seen. She didn’t think they were part of the supermax population. They wore different clothes, and they weren’t like the tattooed men she saw come through the infirmary. But if they weren’t inmates, and they weren’t staff, what were they? She worked around the question for a bit, trying to figure it out.
